It might. I'd prefer not, obviously, but it's the nature of the job.

I'm a Homicide detective.

Shouldn't you be trained to defend yourself then?

We are. That doesn't mean it's a bad idea to bring backup now and then.

Depends on how competent the back-up is. [Someone whom doesn't get shot in the toe, that is.] Still, I'm not sure they would appreciate a civilian and wrongly accused serial killer to help.

That's an interesting way to introduce yourself. [Karen isn't bothered though, just curious.] I'm Karen. My story is much less interesting.

I'm Derek Hale and I tend to end up in the wrong situation at the wrong time. [Which is only halfly his own fault.] As such, me and cops does tend to have a complicated relationship. You're lucky to have a less complicated life.

I guess lucky for both of us then you caught me off duty. Right now I'm just here to relax before all the crazy starts.

Like I said. Wrongly accused. Also, you most likely wouldn't have an easy time catching me.

Don't tell me. I don't need to know. Let's just enjoy the evening before I go home, don't sleep and drag myself to work tomorrow.

I was trying to be funny. At least I haven't tried hitting on you, because that usually goes even worse.

[There's a smile playing on his lips at that.] Oh? So you're saying that you are interested in me?

Derek, you don't want me to flirt with you. [Karen gives him a genuine smile and a laugh of her own in return.] I'm not any good at it. As much as I'd enjoy the company.

Company doesn't have to involve flirting.

No, it doesn't. But I don't mind if it does.
