[She turned to the voice, gave him a quick once over, and smiled.] Away. For entirely too long. There is no other city in the world like New York. I know. I've looked.
[She chuckled.] Glad to see some things haven’t changed. [She stares up at the impossibly tall buildings then the little patch of gray sky.] The energy suits me. Plus I have family here. Not that he will be happy to see me.
[She glanced at him again and returned the smiled that had slightly faltered.] What brings you here? [She taps her lip to explain.] The accent.
Some things just have to be in order for the balance of the world to stay in tact. Vegas needs strippers and the city needs piss soaked streets and rats hiding under Range Rovers in lower Manhattan. [His lips slip into an easy half cocked smirk.] It is a good vibe, isn't it? Kinda shit you write songs about.
[He shrugs.] I live here. [Sam chuckles.] Oh. shit. You picked up on my mid...west...north west? Minnesota. Came here ten years ago. Thought I would be some kind of rock star.
What about you, pretty girl? Why come to a place where you have family if they won't be happy to see you?
Where there are drunk people, there will be drunk people pissing outside somewhere. [She replied like she was philosophizing.] Where would you even find the words? [She clocks his hands to the seasoned calluses one gets after years on the guitar.] Though I suppose finding the words is what you do.
I almost didn’t. It’s pretty slight. [She nodded.] That’s a big dream.
[She smiles a tiny bit brighter when her called her pretty. She loved complements.] No place like home I guess. Besides, even if he still hates me, he’s probably the only person who would actually miss me if I were gone.
[Nikki straitened her spine and gave him a bashful smile.] Sorry. I must be tired. I promise I don’t usually unload my family troubles on complete strangers. [After a beat she offers her hand.] I’m Nikki by the way.
[He takes her hand and gives a soft squeeze.] I'm sure that isn't true at all. You've broken hearts with a smile like that. No one would dare forget you. Let alone hate you.
[Sam purses his lips and nods.] Ah, yeah. Way too personal. [Then he snorts.] Why waste your time on small talk? Who really cares right? Favorite colors or songs? Doesn't really hold a candle to understanding what drives a person. Or scares them, does it?
Sam. Pleasure to meet you Nikki. [There was a spark of light in his light, amber eyes as he said her name. Sam was intrigued, so was the wolf. She didn't know who he was. Even as he fell off the charts most people still recognized him. Or maybe just their mothers did. Still, he liked that she either didn't have a clue or was playing like she didn't. And fuck if she wasn't gorgeous. Sam still hadn't let go of her hand.]
[Finding the right words was definitely what he did. The sadness that brought all the way across the globe retreated somewhere deeper. Those honeyed words on his lips almost made her want to believe him. And when he started in about small talk it both relieved her that she hadn’t embarrassed herself Even as she acknowledged to herself that small talk was usually all she did.]
The pleasure is mine, I’m sure. [She all but purred back. She caught the flash in his eyes and as she waited to see if they would do it again she couldn’t help but note the strange color. She really didn’t recognize him. Though she probably knew his work. Either way she would have remembered eyes like that. The were so much of a distraction she hadn’t even noticed he still had hold of her.]
Actually... [She glances down at the suitcase at her feet.] I need to check in and drop my bag but I could meet you somewhere or... you could come with me?
If I play your bellboy, do I get a tip? [He gave her a sly wink and reached for the bag. Something about her felt dangerous and Sam liked it. He wanted to get closer to the flame. Maybe tempt fate. He was a man on borrowed time so why not?]
[His tone was probably normal or just a little flirty but her mind started flicking through some very graphic ways she could show her appreciation. She lightly touched his cheek as he lifted her bag letting just the tiniest trickle of her power flow into him. Not enough to really thrall him. Just a little taste to tease him.] I believe that could be arranged.
[Sam stopped in his tracks, feeling his heart race a little and his cheeks flush. What the hell just happened? He wasn't that guy anymore. The guy who fell all over himself over a pretty girl. Yet here he was feeling exactly like he was that guy. All he could think about when he looked at her was kissing her. He shook his head and laughed nervously.] Shit. I...sorry. Uh, lead the way?
[He may not be that kind of guy anymore but she was definitely the forward kind of girl. She was a creature led by her baser impulses. Pleasure above all else. When she wanted something, she took it. Poor thing didn't even seem to realize he was prey. Her lips pursed to hide a knowing smile as she slipped her arm through his.] It's only about a block or so. I'm staying at the St. Regis.
[Well, damn. She had been working on a plan for how she wanted to 'bump into' Matt but there he was. Putting on a genuine enough looking smile, Nikki turned to her brother.] Indeed. Hello brother dear.
[Nikki could perhaps be forgiven for not expecting to find her brother hanging around outside a strip club. After all, it was exactly the sort of place he'd have avoided in the past.]
Sister.
Gosh, it's been great catching up. See you again in five years, try not to catch syphilis.
Matt! Wait. [She took a step to stop him from walking away but was careful not to touch him.] Please, I... [That silver tongue of hers faltered as struggled with what to say. There were no words that took back what she did but maybe if he could just understand.] Have you spoken to our father?
No. I don't even know if he's alive. Nicole, I feel like the last time I saw you we were in fucking space, years ago. If I've seen you or him since then? I don't remember. Lots and lots of brainwashing. Thanks for asking.
Why would you want to talk to dad anyway? To remind him he's a shitty father?
Because he found me. He... [There was no way he was going to believe her. Maybe if her father had explained it there was the possibility, albeit slight, that Matt might forgive but if she tried to explain about Kindred it would sound like just another lie. And that part was her fault. She was a liar and manipulator long before Kindred possessed her. She needed time. She needed a plan before she could try and have this conversation.] Nevermind. It was good seeing you. I'm back. For now. At least until I get bored or something. It's not that big of a city. I'm sure our paths will cross again.
[Had she shame, she would have been embarrassed by the places her mind went and that her brother called her out on it but she didn’t. Instead she smirked back and nodded.] I’ll see you there.
[She thought that an hour would give her time to run to the hotel and back but traffic was slow for even NYC. By the time her driver pulled up to the shop, she was almost 20 mins late. So when she didn’t immediately see Matt, she couldn’t help by sigh in disappointment.]
[His voice and proximity startled her and years of conditioning made her respond before she could really think. The years since she last saw him didn’t make her soft. If anything she was forced to rely even more on herself, so when she swing around with a gun aimed at him it wasn’t personal. As soon as she realized it was him, she dropped her hands and registered the gun.] Sorry I’m late.
[He gets in line, buying a coffee and a slice of cake for himself and whatever Nicole decides to get. That sorted, he gets them seated at a small table in the corner.]
