[ neil appreciates the attention, giving his cheek a thoughtful scratch before continuing. ]

Well, there's certainly no need for flattery, but there is a special sort of pride in the new system I've arranged. With each new inversion, we are developing a narrative. A sort of — I won't call it a blueprint, I suppose it's more of a — theory for the layout of one possible future.

[ casper straightens his back, a sigh escaping his nose. while he's proud of neil for the work he's doing — the study of inversion has been wholly unsuccessful until neil took over the department, he feels as if what he has said was enough praise. ]

Only you would take that as flattery. Yes, I've seen. Your reports have come across my office before being directed to Trench. How does it feel? To be submitting your own studies?

[ head canted, casper stares at neil with scrutiny. it's not mean-spirited, but curious. he wants to know neil's answer. ]

Yes, well — it's gratifying, if I'm being honest. The inclusion of an office certainly doesn't hurt, but it wasn't what initially drew me to the position.

[ he's brimming with them, the possibilities of inversion and their potential could change the way they see the oldest house, the way they see everything. ]

[ casper is curious, hand reaching up to adjust his glasses. whatever fire that lit itself under neil has proven to be significant — the ideas, the studies, the experiments. it's been highly fascinating to see and read about the research he's been doing. the sector takes pride in being on the cutting edge of interdimensional science — and inversion is part of that. ]

I'll give as much as I can — though it will be honest, Neil. You know I don't have it in me to coddle. I'm here to learn what you've discovered, and that's my goal. You have shown yourself capable — now is the time to put it to the test, so to speak.

[wry, smiling a little in response] I’m beginning to think I should’ve brought aspirin.

[ he issues a noiseless chuckle, a thoughtful shake of his head. ] Certainly wouldn't hurt to keep a spare on you, given the nature of our work.

To the position? [ he gives a contemplative pause, hands tented, before separating and beginning to work in tandem with his words. ] There are facets to the Oldest House that we understand, or are at least capable of wrapping our minds around, in a way that makes sense. I've been fascinated by the idea of temporal research, even in my days at University. To watch it unfold in real time, and to have what is, truthfully, very little comprehension of what we're looking at, being tasked to resolve that conundrum, is — I suppose, rather a dream come true.

[ neil nods, understanding, and chuckles lightly. ]

I wouldn't wish you to. Strictly speaking, I welcome the challenge.
