[ Smiling reassuringly. ] I promise to stay.

Now, that's a promise that's hard to keep.

[Danny tries not to sound bitter about it. But broken promises are more common than kept ones, in his experience.]

They always are. Circumstances don't seem to want us to keep our promises. I guess I should say "I promise not to abandon of my own will".

[ He's used to broken promises and shattered expectations himself. ]

A bit wordy, but more precise, [Danny replies.]

[He bounces on the balls of his feet for a moment, thinking, then muses aloud,] And when people die on us, it's usually not willful abandonment.

[ He sighs, tired of feeling helpless. You wouldn't think "superheroes" would feel helpless, but here we are. ]

True. Can't really blame the dead for dying though. I guess I'm just trying to be better at showing up for people, and not running off when things get - [ Trying not to think about their father's most recent betrayal, or how things last ended with Allison ] - unnecessarily stressful.

From experience, promises generally automatically complicates everything.

[If it came up in conversation, as a former member of a superhero team, Danny could confirm that metahuman abilities don't usually make a dent in emotional range, including helplessness. As it is, he doesn't really know the cause of that sigh.]

True enough. People rarely go into dangerous situations expecting to die, but it's always a risk... [Danny gives the other guy a curious look, and says,] Somehow, I get the feeling that "unnecessarily stressful" is an understatement. But you don't have to feel the need to elaborate to a stranger if you don't want to.

True, but... Intention has to count for something. I mean, what else do we have?

Maybe in the long run what there is, it’s the understanding not everything is in our control to guarantee promises are kept all of the time. And the people who matter, really matter, get that.
