[[OOC: I went back and forth whether or not to tag you with my DC Comics muse who is an Atlantean, and whether or not that would be a dickish move. Feel free to ignore.]]
The legends said... I don't put much stock in legends, but the legends always said that Atlanteans had displeased the Goddess of the Sky, and that's why we were sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
If Suula wanted to kill us all, it didn't work out as planned... some of us survived.
Oh yes, because it’s never your fault, is it? Such fables are created to make people feel better about themselves. I let Atlantis drown because they deserved it. If anyone survived it was the whim of the sea, no gods or goddesses. Just an Angel.
[Garth points out (in a somewhat cautious tone of voice),] Given that I wasn't around when Atlantis was on the surface... I'd say not my fault, personally.
What did the Atlanteans do to deserve mass drowning? Was it baby abandonment, because they kept doing that after Atlantis sank and they adapted to the ocean, so...
Then you are as responsible as your ancestors. They began to believe in gods and goddesses more than me! While I was the one who protected them and watched over them for thousands of years.
Of course they do. They are creatures, so they have God. But as He is far too busy, doing whatever it is He does, He sends us, Guardian Angels to care for His creation.
[It's voice is smooth as silk. Belying the actual resentment It holds against God.]
Fair point... I suppose it's more accurate to say that manatees don't have organized religion. [A thought, which sounds an awful lot like Roy's voice, pops unbidden into Garth's head -- 'What would you call that? Mormon-atees?' and Garth bites the side of his tongue to keep it only in his head.]
Oh... [Garth thinks over that explanation.] But, if God is too busy to care for Creation, then does worship even have a point?
Ah yes. Of course it does. God is very good at delegating. So you can understand my anger when all the work I did was credited to these gods and goddesses of whom you speak. He had delegated me to watch over Atlantis.
To worship me is to worship God. But to worship all these falsities, is rather... problematic for everyone.
[Garth can understand, to a degree. He might not show it often, but he does get angry when his own contributions to his team are devalued or treated as a joke.]
Do people have to worship the right names for their prayers and good deeds to count? What if people don't know the right names? [He is genuinely curious.] Is that what makes it a problem?
[The Angel is getting slightly annoyed again. If some Atlanteans survived, then perhaps they need to be taken care of as well. Their utter stupidity is what It cannot abide.]
Intent is what matters most. Even when they had an Angel in their midst, they still turned to false gods. It is a conscious decision at that point. I gave them everything and they turned from me.
[It sighs heavily.]
I might have understood, had they turned to God, but no. They were too stupid for even that much.
I've never heard of an Angel protecting Atlantis. The legends that I mentioned before? Don't say anything about an Angel, and nothing about the Presence...
[Garth frowns,] And I know that legends are incomplete, as a rule, but that's all the record we have of that time. What bothers me, though... for there to be no mention at all seems... deliberate.
Yes, trying to erase the wrong they've done. What really led to their demise. Would you want such information to be handed down for all of recorded history?
Or, perhaps you are being lied to and you're not really an Atlantean, but they tell you such stories to make you feel special.
I'm Hera, first born daughter of Cronus, sister-wife of Zeus and queen of Olympus. I can't say I've heard of you and my brother Poseidon was the one whom sunk Atlantis.
