Figures. Mothers are an evolutionary imperative. We'd all be screwed without them. *folds his paper up and tosses it aside* Thanks for proving the theory.
*grabs his cane and goes over to the nurses station, picking up the kid's chart* Come on. I'm destroying the human race one accident prone juvenile at a time. Step one involves making sure you don't bleed to death. *holds the exam room door open for him*
You're a doctor? *follows after him and heads into the exam room* I was distracted when my board slipped that's how my hand got cut. It has nothing to do with how my father raised me.
"That's not good. I'm going to need to take a look at it, depending on how deep the cut is, you might need surgery." Luka rose and gathered gauze, antiseptic, gloves, and a suture kit which he deposited on a wheeled tray table before returning to the stool.
"I'm going to take your bandage off, and clean things up first. Do you have someone here with you?"
"If you have the number, I can have the nurses call while we get started, I'm sure that they'd want to be here with you." As he talks he takes Gideon's hand in his and starts unwinding the towel.
"No need. I don't want to bother my dad unless I have to have surgery in case it's a bad day,"he sighed,"A bird house. One of the bigger ones not a small one."
"Well, I have to have an adult's consent to treat you, so, we really do need to talk to him. Besides, I don't think he'd consider it a bother." He reached for gauze to replace the towel before removing it, just in case the wound was still bleeding.
"Hmm, I'm afraid we need to try, if we don't connect with him, at least we have it on file that the attempt was made." As he revealed the still oozing slice across his palm, Luka pressed the gauze to it.
"Can you keep pressure on that for me for a second?" He dropped the bloody towel on the tray then opened the antiseptic and suture kit. Wetting a fresh pad of gauze he returned his attention to the boy's hand.
"Thank you, I'll take it now." He removed the blood soaked gauze.
"This might sting some." He offered the warning before attempting to clean the blood away so he could get a better view.
"They're not so bad, and I'll numb things up before I start." He lays a gauze pad over the wound before pulling the needed items out of the suture kit.
"This needle will numb your hand. You'll feel a little pinch when I stick it in, nothing more then that." He removes the gauze as he moves the tray closer and positions Gideon's hand on it.
"I just need you to stay as still as you can, okay?"
"Dr. Kovac, and his injury isn't too bad, not so deep he'll need surgery, but, I will need to put stitches in to close the wound." Luka cast a glance to the boy's father long enough to identify himself before turning his attention back to his work.
"Thank you, Dr. Kovac. I appreciate all you've done for him, and I'm so glad he's going to be all right. Carpentery is a favorite hobby of Gideon's, and accidents of this kind are rare for him.
"It's all part of being a boy." He addressed Gideon's father but gave the boy a slight smile.
"Is it okay, not hurting too much?" His stitches were small and tight, intended to leave as minimal a scar as possible once the wound healed.
"Almost done, I just need to bandage your hand, and you'll wat to keep it elevated and dry as much as you can. I'll send instructions home with you too. I'm going to give you a prescription for some pain medication, just in case you need them for the next couple of days." As he explained he finished tying off the last of the stitches and wrapped first cotton, then a wrap around Gideon's hand.
"That's because of the anesthetic, when it wears off, it will. You can take Tylenol if it's not too bad, but, if that doesn't help, then you need to take one of the stronger pills. Now, the stitches will need to stay in about ten days, until then, just take it easy, okay?" He finishes taping off the bandage then pulled a pad from his pocket to write out the prescription for the pain pills. Once done he hands it to Gideon.
"You're all done, we just need to get you some after-care instructions to take home and sign you out and you can go home. Do you have any questions?"

"Hi, I'm Dr. Kovac." He snags a stool with his foot and takes a seat so he isn't towering over the boy.
"What happened to your hand?"

He bit his lip to keep quiet when he started cleaning the wound.

"It looks like you're going to luck out, it's not going to need surgery, but, It will need stitches." He lifted his eyes to catch the boy's reaction.
"Have you ever had stitches before?"

"I'm glad. I really don't want to have to deal with a surgery,"Gideon looked down,"No no stitches before."

He relaxed a little trying to stay more focused on the process than on the little pain there was.
