Won?

The past tense of win. The opposite of lost.

Whoever benefits.

Well, yes. But I think losing is usually quite lacking in benefits. Unless that sort of thing gets you going, of course.

There's a story I once heard on an old LP to the effect of, not everyone who comes in first wins anything of value.

Sometimes they win the right to be eaten by the tiger.

Now that would have been an outcome I would have been happy with.
