You know Roger, Richard, Michael and I have basically kept mum on the subject since we don't want to sound petty or bitter toward the company that did so much for us over the years, but having seen this new program, I have to say it was dreadful.
Take the scripted, phony, quote-blurb hungry fluff of the E! Network and combine it with CNN's Crossfire, where a bunch of people just shout at each other a lot, and you have a small idea of how painful and aggravating this new show is.
What happened to the developed, in-depth, thoughtful analysis and discussion that Roger and I tried to encourage? Is this really what's happening to film criticism these days?
The only one worse is that Mr. Moviefone. It's all shouting and laughing at their own non-existant wit.
I always loved how you guys all discussed the making of movies, the emotional impact. You didn't always agree, and I didn't always agree with you, but you always did it with reason and thoughtful analysis.
There's nothing honest or spontaneous or knowledgeable about it. Roger and I could smile and laugh at ourselves and each other because we had authenticity and objectivity on our side. We cared only about the movies on our show, whether or not they were any good to us, and articulating what makes them good or bad. I can only hope that people that can thoughtfully and fairly study and critique a film can come forward and continue that tradition.
