Halloween, what does it celebrate exactly?

*grins* Well, it's *also* a remnant of this very old holiday, All Hallow's Eve. Or Samhain. Depends how far back you want to go. Standard end-of-harvest, day-of-the-dead sort of celebration. Line between the world of the living and the world of the dead weakens, everyone spends an evening placating spirits and setting fires.

Nowadays, it's more placating small children. Not so many fires.

Oi, why not? Death's part of life. Where's the harm in a day of remembrance? Dwelling, that's not good, you don't want to dwell,...but no one's immortal. Not even children.

Like I said, it's not about death so much, anymore, as it is sugar. Which, Mexico, best of both worlds, sugar *and* death.

Mm, traditions have a way of degrading over time, turning into echoes of themselves. Used to be, people took these superstitions seriously, gave offerings to costumed community members, dressed up as demons. Today, it's giving SweeTarts to Power Rangers and Hannah Montanas who'd rather have the good candy. I like SweeTarts, myself, come in those necklaces.

Día de los Muertos! Day of the Dead! South American country, Mexico, their spirit-honoring day. They makes these candy skulls, lovely, sugar and piped icing.

Oh, you've been doing your homework. Good. *smile of Astrid approval* If you need it, scanner's got this database, it's in Gallifreyan, but I can load up the translation for you.

'Course they've got Twinkies. I'm sure someone gives those out, hand out anything they've got batting about their pantries, some people. Dunno if we've got any on the TARDIS. There's Hostess cupcakes and Peeps. Maybe some Sno Balls.

*bounces on his heels, hands in pockets, tongue to the top of his month--Doctor hee!expression* Yep! Got a theme running, haven't I?

Right, I'll have that set up first--mm. Well, I'll see if the Other Doctor's system's the same. I'll put down money he's forgotten the password.

Entirely a fluke! That's me, as many flukes as a whale. *innocent!Doctor is innocent. It's not like he's got this thing for past-blood-sacrificing cultures and wars and the like that's a bit OOC for most Doctors*

Depends on the culture. Lot of them dress up for celebrations and give sweets to the dead. Most cultures Halloween or whatever they celebrate as similar isn't a mourning or sad occasion but a way of honoring the dead more like you would on a birthday.

Some people think it does. For a lot of people dressing up is a way of celebration. Think lot of people've forgotten what the holiday means and just go in for the commercial side of it.

Imagine death's right in step with birth when it comes to being part of religion and ceremony. Can't escape either of them.

Well, it's the sweets-and-apples celebration before the celebration on November 4th.
