You'd better be. There's still the silver in the dining room to finish and the brass in the drawing room wants looking at before his Lordship gets back. One of the maids have made a proper mess of it. [None of which Thomas has any intention of doing himself, of course. He has his own duties to perform and he'd sooner see to them than help to make sure William isn't run completely ragged.]
Of course. [He studies the shoe, deemed respectable, at least to him he set it down] I'll be started on the silver immediately. Brass too. Is there anything else? [Of course he's well aware that is more than enough to get too but it seemed rude not to check. After all he believes Thomas is simply trying to help him. In his own way]
That's enough to be getting on with, at least 'till the family get back. [Sitting himself down at the table, he busies himself with taking a small tobacco tin from the pocket of his trousers and rolling himself a cigarette. Oh, poor, naive William. Thomas isn't one to do anyone any favours, especially not without the clear understanding that he expects a favour in return.]
[He nods towards the row of newly polished boots.] I'll see to them.
[He has a few, actually, but he's not about to divulge anything he might be able to use to his advantage later.] She's not likely to talk to me about it, is she?
[Shrugging nonchalantly, he strikes a match, cigarette between his lips.] She's too simple, that girl.
She's quiet- [He hates to say this but everyone knows it] -Fond of you, I thought maybe she'd have said something. But you are wrong about that. She's not simple. She's a good girl. Kind.
[Unfortunately for William, nobody's more aware of Daisy's affection for him than Thomas himself.] If she wasn't, she'd have told Mrs Hughes about whatever's got her goat from the start.
[He sighed deeply] You may have a point. [He hesitated wishing he could ask Thomas to be- well less Thomas. To leave Daisy be, to- He wasn't sure what he wanted but he wished Thomas would give Daisy space to notice him]
[Unbeknownst to William, Thomas has his eye set on less conventional fare, but that doesn't mean he won't offer Daisy the odd sign of encouragement. A brief smile here, a casual wink there... And all so that he can control the situation and wait until the opportune moment to manipulate it.]
See that you do. You know how her Ladyship gets when there're guests 'round the house.

[He paused awkwardly for a moment before asking] Do, Do you have any idea what's been troubling Daisy?

[Settles back, cigarette smoldering between his fingers and unfurling the newspaper someone else abandoned on the table.] No rest for the wicked.
