I guess some circumstances call for surrendering... I guess I just wanna keep fighting. I dunno, but I kinda like the way things are now. I feel like I have a real purpose in life. That probably sounds strange.
I know exactly how that sounds; I'm not sure what I would do if I would have to go back to the old life again. [ Tom felt strange to hear it. He had a chance to retire in Brazil of all places, but he opted not to. ] If we're going to become extinct, at least we should do it while still standing on our feet.
I'm someone understands. I hated this at the beginnin', but I don't mind it now. ( She supposes it had something to do with being seen differently now. No longer was she just 'Hershel Greene's oldest daughter'. ) Exactly. Don't think I would ever forgive myself if I just laid down arms and allowed 'em to do what they wanted to me.
I don’t agree with some things. [ And, he was no longer just a university professor. It was daunting and he literally had the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Tom shuffled the rifle on his shoulders, and he nodded his head when she mentioned laying down her arms. ] Neither would I, not when I sacrificed so much and came so far.
( Maggie sits down on the cement stoop and cradles her gun between her hands. ) May I ask what ya don't agree with?
When all this started, there were so many people that didn't want to sacrifice anything. they wanted someone else to clean up this mess so they could get on with their lives. Sad to say, they were the ones that died first.
[ Tom removed his gun, and he went to join her on the step as he rested his gun in his lap. He took in a long deep breath, as a sad look that crept up on his face. ] That my sons have turned into soldiers, especially my youngest. [ Tom lowered his head into his hands, and he took in a deep breath. ]
He should be worried about which new video game he wants to buy, horrible teachers, you know kids stuff. My eldest should be in college and my middle son right behind him. Instead, they're fighting the same fight as every other able body human.
[ It had broke Tom's heart when Matt felt school was utterly useless, but deep down inside, Tom knew that right now the kid was right. He had no idea how Ben would handle the old world as they knew it. ] I think, we've all made many sacrifices in this fight.
I'm not sure who or what you're talking about. [ Tom looked a bit confused for a moment, as he turned his head to face the strange girl. ] If you're talking about the Espheni, we're not going to let them take the Earth without putting up a fight first.
( Maggie didn't have children of her own, but she'd been there to watch Carl go from being the kid lying on her dad's bed, bleeding to death, to a killer. And, it broke her heart to know the other kids in the group would soon learn how to fight, too. They tried to make it so they still could do kid things, but it wasn't always easy. ) I'm sorry. I know that probably doesn't take away the pain of it, but I really am. This world has made too many kids into victims, and made the rest grow up too fast.
( She sighed then and nodded her head. Sacrifice was what they did now, and it was second nature to most. Sure, there was still the occasional selfish person left, but they were easily ignored. ) Besides all of this, how have ya been doin'?
The what? That is not what they are called, I am talking about the Stenches that are over-running the planet as we speak. {And she was covered in blood, both fresh and coagulated, as well as dead skin. Carrying all of her weapons and the clothing on her back.}
I think everyone is trying to do what's best for our only home. Even if we had spread ourselves across the stars, I do believe Earth would have a special place in our hearts.
[ Tom wants to see his kids grow up and live what was once a normal life. He hates the lingering feeling that he has gnawing on the back of his neck that they would end up as another casualty of the Espheni war.
He places his hands on his kneecaps, and he looks up at the cloud-covered sky with a longing look on his face. ] I'm going to say, I'm enjoying the fact... [ He lifts his hands from his knees, and he looks at her with a smile on his face. ] I'm sitting here and having this conversation with you, so I'd say my day's been pretty good so far.
[ That made Tom uneasy, and after spending two years under alien rule it was understandable. He took a step back, and he tilted his head to the side with a puzzled look on his face. ] Then why is it worth saving, if you want it for other reasons, you're going to have a fight on your hands.
( Maggie may not have children of her own, but she adores the ones in their group. She feels bad that she was able to grow up in a normal home, surrounded by her family, while these kids ere learning how to handle weapons, when they should be learning long division.
When he speaks again, she looks to him and returns his smile. ) Good. Not everyday has to turn out badly. ( A pause. ) Any plans for tomorrow?
